M20A1 Simplified Collective Protective Equipment (SCPE)

The M20A1 provides a clean-air shelter for use against chemical and biological warfare agents and radioactive particles. The M20A1 is an inflatable shelter which allows personnel to perform duties without wearing individual protective equipment. The M20A1 provides over 200 square feet of floor space. If a shelter of more than 200 square feet of floor space is needed, two or more complete M20A1 SCPE systems can be joined.

To provide NBC protection, a higher pressure must exist inside the shelter than outside the shelter. In order to have clean air in the shelter, the airflow that causes the pressure must pass through a filter. Since the M20A1 is an overpressure system, small leaks in the shelter liner will have no effect as long as pressure is maintained inside the shelter.

When the system is pressurized, almost all airflow into the shelter will flow from the liner through the protective entrance to the contaminated exterior. As a result, the shelter will be supplied with constant clean make-up air. The motor blower (part of the accessory kit) inflates the shelter. Vents, between the shelter and the protective entrance, and vents between the protective entrance and the outside, are adjusted for the proper pressure inside the shelter and protective entrance. As a result, clean air flowing from the shelter to the outside through the protective entrance purges toxic vapors from the system.
